There is a physical network of copper and fiber cabling, which is usually hidden above ceilings and below floors, behind every video call, security camera feed, hospital record, and financial transaction. If these cables aren't systematically identified, organisations can expect outages, expensive troubleshooting and unnecessary safety hazards. This article reviews the color coding of structured cabling, in which installers use a color scheme for jackets, labels or patch cords to identify different functional groups of cables like user data, voice services, security systems, powered devices, backbone links, and critical emergency circuits. The article describes the techniques and technologies involved discusses measurable operational and economic benefits and points out a major disconnect between formal standard assignments and the application of informal conventions that prevail in the field, based on the administration and cabling standards published under the ANSI/TIA framework, specifically the ANSI/TIA606 administration standard and the ANSI/TIA-568 cabling series. The discussion illustrates that colour coding is not a mere cosmetic choice, but a discipline which can help to minimize downtime, maintenance costs, increase safety and maintain institutional knowledge across technician generations. The article concludes by suggesting that the everyday conventions and published standards can be harmonized and that this should be integrated in professional education, providing long-term value to engineers, managers, organizations and the public.
